History of Lucky Sixpence
The tradition of the lucky sixpence coin goes back to the middle ages
when people sought to ward off evil spirits. The belief was that these
spirits were very active at certain ceremonies including weddings. Coins
were one item believed to assist in warding of the spirits. Weddings were
also a time when the gift of silver was passed to a bride, to the silver
coin (sixpence) was applicable in both cases and has stood as a tradition
since.
